How We Safely Progress Strength Training After 60

your safety is our priority

At Redefining Age, we don’t rush strength. We build it.

Many women over 60 come to strength training with one of two stories:

  • They’ve been told to “be careful” and avoid lifting anything heavy
  • They’ve been pushed too fast in the past and walked away with aches, shoulder irritation, or frustration.

We don’t take either approach.

Instead, we follow a structured progression that respects how your body adapts — especially in this season of life.

Step One: Build Stability Before Strength

In your first phase of training, we focus on posture, joint alignment, and movement quality.

:We teach your body how to:

  • Engage the right muscles
  • Support your shoulders
  • Stabilize your core
  • Control the weight — not swing it

Our goal is this first step is to build strong foundations. This will protect you later.

Step Two: Add Strength Gradually

Once your body understands the movement patterns, we begin adding load — thoughtfully. We increase weight only when:

  • Your form is consistent
  • Your posture remains strong
  • You can complete your reps with control
  • You finish knowing you could have done one more

This is when your body tells us that it is ready for more. It’s a process of intelligent progression.

Step Three: Build Confidence Under Load

In your third phase, you’ll notice a shift that feels good. You’re no longer trying to “be careful”. You’ll find that you are capable with the movements and the load. And you’ll feel like you know what you’re doing.

  • Your muscles respond faster.
  • Your posture improves.
  • Daily activities feel easier.
  • You begin to see tone and strength in places that once felt soft or unstable.

We may challenge you — but never at the expense of your joints or your overall safety.

What to expect

01. WArm-up

You’ll first set a simple intention for the session—how you want to feel when you leave. We begin with purposeful movement to activate the joints and muscles we’re about to train.

02. balance & Core

Your core acts as a link between your upper and lower body. We work to strengthen it by focusing on a three-level progression to improve steadiness—stabilization, strength, and power.

03. Strength training

You’ll train foundational movements that support stability, flexibility, and full-body strength. We often use simple techniques to help you feel muscles working, perfect your form, and build strength safely.

04. cooldown

We bring the nervous system down to restore mobility and muscle length balance. We wrap up the session with a simple mental takeaway—so you leave grounded and clear.

Frequently Asked Questions

Absolutely. We begin gently, at a pace that feels comfortable, and build strength gradually. There’s no pressure and no judgment. You’ll be amazed by how quickly your confidence grows.

That’s very common, and I design every workout with your limitations in mind. You’ll receive modifications, alternatives, and supportive coaching every step of the way.

This is normal — and you won’t feel this way for long. My coaching style is warm, supportive, and completely judgment-free. I celebrate your progress, honor your pace, and help you feel proud of every step you take.

That is okay. Many exercises can be adapted using a chair or standing position. You’ll be encouraged to work at a level that feels safe and appropriate for your body.

I have a Personal Trainer certification with a Senior Fitness specialization through the National Association of Sports Medicine (NASM).

Most women begin feeling improvements within just a few weeks. More noticeable physical changes typically appear between 6–12 weeks, depending on your consistency and goals.

Very little. Most clients start with a pair of light dumbbells, resistance band, sturdy chair, and a yoga mat (optional). If you don’t have anything yet, we can begin with bodyweight exercises.

If you have a diagnosed condition or concerns about exercise safety, I will likely ask you to get medical clearance first. We discuss safety issues during our first meeting. This ensures you feel confident and supported before starting your program.

Just schedule a free consultation. We’ll talk about your goals, your comfort level, and what you hope to feel in your body. If it’s a good fit, we’ll create a personalized plan and take the first step together.

Your journey to healthy longevity starts today.
