Working with people as a coach and counselor, what I’ve seen to be one of the greatest obstacles that people face is accepting the belief that they can successfully create change. In many instances, we have habits or ways of being that are attached to how we see ourselves. And these habits or ways of being will continue to be difficult to change until you are able to see yourself without them.
You must believe you can change before you commit to the work. But what does that look like?
My Example
For me it was the fact that I was overweight from grammar school until my second year in college. I grew up seeing myself as an overweight person. After numerous failed diets throughout the years, it became a stretch for me to consider I would be anything but overweight. One morning when I was 19, I got out of bed anticipating a party that I was going to that night. At that moment I realized that I was sick of being overweight, not feeling good about my appearance, not being able to wear the “cute” clothes my friends would wear to the party.
I decided I was willing to do whatever work it would take to change my weight. I took it one day at a time making healthy choices and changing the way that I ate. Within a few months I dropped 40 pounds and changed my lifestyle forever.
The 7 Steps to Change
I didn’t realize it at the time, but I was following these keys to success in creating any change.
- Declare that you are no longer willing to tolerate a particular habit or way of being
- Identify the specific things you need to do differently to change
- Acknowledge and own the fact that you are in complete control of your actions
- Recognize the process of change as being day by day
- Commit to taking the desired actions one day at a time
- If you fall, forgive yourself and start fresh
- At the end of each day, feel good about your ability to make the choice you want and create the change you desire
With a focus on making your desired change, is there anything standing in your way of embracing each of the 7 steps to create the life you want?
